Hala is a strong, bumpy tree that is used in mats and houses. It is the symbol and has a lot of history connected with Punahou. It has some roots that are exposed and the roots are bumpy too. The tips of the aerial roots are rich in vitamin B and eaten raw or cooked for medicine.
