Koa by Kate

Did you know that the Koa tree is endemic? It is endemic because it is native to Hawaii and found nowhere else in the world.

Some facts are that the Koa trees are found in drier forests on mountain sides. When the trees grow closer together, the trunks grow straight and tall (up to 60 feet tall) before beginning to branch out. You know it is a Koa tree if the leaves are small and oval shaped.

What are some of its uses? The trunks are used for canoe hulls, paddles, surfboards, and calabashes. They don't use it for bowls because the sap has a disagreeable flavor.
